Devo – Psalms 74


Psalm 74 is a lamentation attributed by many to be Asaph, who is distressed over the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by foreign invaders, likely the Babylonians. The psalmist calls on God to remember His covenant and intervene to save His people. Asaph reflects on God’s past deeds and pleads for divine action in the present.

  1. Verses 1-3: The psalmist begins by expressing distress over the destruction of the sanctuary and asks God why He has allowed this to happen.
  2. Verses 4-9: Asaph describes the devastation caused by the invaders, including the destruction of the Temple’s carved wood and gold decorations.

  4. Verses 18-23: Asaph pleads for God to take action against the enemies who have scorned and blasphemed His name, asking for God’s intervention and vindication.
  5. Verses 24-25: The psalmist reaffirms trust in God, despite the current troubles, acknowledging God as their King from of old.

Life Applications:
