Devo – Genesis 12

  1. Verse 1-3: God calls Abram (later known as Abraham) to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s house to go to a land that God will show him. God promises to make Abram a great nation, bless him, and make his name great. God also declares that through Abram, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
  2. Verse 4-9: Abram obeys God’s call, taking his wife Sarai (later known as Sarah) and his nephew Lot, and they set out for the land of Canaan. Upon reaching Canaan, God appears to Abram, promising to give that land to his descendants. Abram builds an altar there to worship the Lord.

My applications

  1. Reading about God’s call to Abram to leave everything behind and embark on a journey to an unknown land challenges me to examine my willingness to follow God’s lead in my life. It encourages me to be open to God’s direction, even if it requires stepping out of my comfort zone and leaving familiar circumstances.
  2. God’s promise to bless Abram and make him a great nation reminds me of God’s faithfulness and provision in my own life. It encourages me to trust that God has a plan and purpose for me, and His blessings will unfold in His perfect timing.
  3. The promise that all families on earth will be blessed through Abram highlights the universal impact of God’s plan of redemption. It reminds me of the privilege and responsibility I have as a follower of Christ to share His love and salvation with others, being a blessing to those around me.
  4. Observing Abram’s act of building an altar to worship the Lord after reaching Canaan teaches me the importance of expressing gratitude and reverence to God for His guidance and protection. It encourages me to cultivate a lifestyle of worship, acknowledging God’s goodness in my life through prayer and praise.
  5. Abram’s obedience in leaving for Canaan, despite the challenges of the journey, shows me the significance of trusting in God’s promises and plans. It prompts me to have faith in God’s leading, even when the path ahead seems unclear, knowing that He is faithful to guide and provide.
  6. Lastly, I learn from Abram’s example that God’s calling may involve leaving certain things behind. It could be physical possessions, harmful relationships, or unhealthy habits. I am prompted to evaluate my life and be willing to let go of anything that hinders my walk with God, embracing the new opportunities and blessings He has in store.
